🌡️ Qatar's Climate Overview
Qatar has a hot desert climate (Köppen BWh), characterised by extremely hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The country sits at approximately 25°N latitude on the Arabian Peninsula, surrounded by the Arabian Gulf on three sides, which moderates temperatures somewhat while adding high humidity during the warmer months.
Annual rainfall averages only 70–80 mm, almost all falling between November and March. Snow is essentially unknown.
☀️ Seasonal Breakdown
| Season | Months | Avg High | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | Dec–Feb | 22–24°C | Mild, occasional rain |
| Spring | Mar–May | 30–38°C | Rising temps, dusty |
| Summer | Jun–Sep | 40–45°C | Extreme heat & humidity |
| Autumn | Oct–Nov | 30–36°C | Cooling, rare showers |
🔥 Heat Safety in Qatar
During June–September, outdoor conditions can be dangerous. Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C with heat index values above 50°C when humidity is factored in. Workers are legally protected under Qatar Labour Law — outdoor work is banned between 10:00 and 15:30 from 1 June to 15 September.
Stay hydrated (3–4 litres of water per day), avoid direct sun between 10:00–16:00, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat.
🌪️ Shamal Winds & Dust Storms
The Shamal is a north-westerly wind that affects Qatar primarily in June–July and December–January. Summer Shamal events bring dust and sand storms that can reduce visibility to under 1 km. The PM10 particulate concentration during major events can exceed 1,000 μg/m³ — 20× the WHO guideline.
During dust events: keep windows closed, wear an N95 mask outdoors, avoid driving, and monitor air quality alerts.
💧 Humidity & Rainfall
Qatar's proximity to the Arabian Gulf means coastal humidity is very high from May through September. Doha averages relative humidity above 60% in summer months, with nighttime values often exceeding 85%.
The wettest month is typically February (average ~18 mm). Humidity is highest from July to August when sea surface temperatures peak. Coastal Doha regularly records relative humidity above 80% at night during these months, while inland areas like Dukhan remain drier.
🌅 UV Index & Sun Hours
Qatar receives 9–11 hours of sunshine per day year-round, making it one of the sunniest countries globally. The UV index peaks between April and September, regularly reaching 10–12 (Very High to Extreme).
UV safety guide:
— UV 1–2: No protection needed
— UV 3–5: Sunscreen SPF 30+ recommended
— UV 6–7: High — hat and shade essential
— UV 8–10: Very High — avoid midday sun
— UV 11+: Extreme — stay indoors 10:00–16:00
